Is there a way to receive an email in the event of a [WARNING] so I can be mindful if a bad actor is trying to get in?

Fail2Ban is your friend.
When it picks up on N number of attempts it can send you an email.

Have a search around for that.
The directory will be /etc/fail2ban/
