Debian 9

Does anyone have Freeswitch/Fusion working on Debian 9? If so what is involved? Compiling from source maybe?

The Freeswitch people recommend Debian but apparently that hasn't translated into making it work on Debian 9 using the deb packages. I have read about it so I know why. My concern is that it doesn't sound like they are interested in correcting that for whatever reason. Seems they are now saying they won't correct it till Freeswitch v1.8 and who knows how long that will be.

They are still targeting Debian 8 as their platform of choice. There's still plenty of life left in Debian 8 - although personally i just run FusionPBX in its own container.

What do you mean by "In its own container?"

in my case I am running it in an LXC container in Proxmox. you could also run it in Docker or whatever your poison is.

Running it in a container does not remove the OS requirement.

Its not perfect, but it removes worrying about old kernel vs new hardware. You'll just have to either install on 8 and upgrade - then see what happens. Or, try to shoehorn on to 9.
