It is a simple shell script that can be easily integrated into many setups, via the various 'Hooks' that it implements. If you run your own DNS or have easy access to update the zone files then wildcard certificates are very easy to get using the challenge type "dns-01".
It is quite common for larger organisations to set up a "certificate Server", this is a machine that fetches and renews certificates when required and then makes them available for all the servers in an organisation to download, thus removing the need for each individual server to access Letsencrypt.
